New Evangelization Mission Trip

Forty seminarians of Mount St. Mary’s seminary travelled to the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie-Mellon University last week for their New Evangelization Mission Trip. The goal of this trip was to encounter college students and invite into a real and lasting relationship with Christ. The seminarians worked with Fr. Joshua and Fr. Stephen to facilitate and organize the trip, and Br. Paul and Br. Peter, as seminarians at Mount St. Mary’s, participated in the trip as well. The seminarians were from dioceses all over the country and they gave up their Fall break to work with us in our efforts to reach the university students.

The trip lasted from Monday, October 13 to Wednesday, October 15. For seven hours on both Tuesday and Wednesday, the seminarians engaged the task of bringing the gospel directly to the students of Pitt. Wearing their characteristic black with roman collars, the seminarians stood as a visible sign of contradiction to the college worldview and a witness to the hope that we have in Christ. On Wednesday, students were invited to participate in the event that evening entitled “The Relevancy of Faith,” featuring talks from Fr. Joe Freedy, vocations director for the Diocese of Pittsburgh; Ben Dunkelberger, a seminarian of the Diocese of Harrisburg and a graduate of Pitt; and Sean Tomko, a senior Mechanical Engineering student at Pitt.

The seminarians were aided in their efforts by three seminarians of the Diocese of Pittsburgh, three Mundelein Seminarians, and many students and FOCUS missionaries from Pitt, CMU, and Mount St. Mary’s University.

A special thanks to all staff of the Ryan Catholic Newman Center, the adult volunteers who helped with meals, the families that hosted seminarians over night, and the priests and staff of St. Paul Cathedral. For more pictures of the week click here.
