SEEK 2015

February 9, 2015

Early the Morning of January 1st roughly 150 students from the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, Chatham, and other surrounding schools headed to Nashville, TN to join 9,500 college students from around the country for the bi-annual SEEK conference organized by FOCUS. Days at this powerful Christ-centered conference began with The Holy Sacrifice of The Mass. Following Mass, men and women parted ways to hear specific talks directed to their particular needs on the subject of living truly Catholic lives as individuals in relationship to God, their brothers and sisters,  and to the world at large.  In the afternoon students took part in smaller “impact sessions” of their choosing on a range of topics such as “over-population”, the significance of Mary, The Eucharist, same-sex attraction, the connection between science and Faith,  and many other issues regarding our life of Faith. In the evenings all 9500 students attended a presentation given by keynote speakers such as Fr. Mike Schmitz and Curtis Martin. Each day ended with a special recreational event, including a dance and a night with comedian Jim Gaffigan (a practicing Catholic). Saturday evening however (the 2nd full day of the conference), was an evening of Eucharistic Adoration attended by all.  This powerful encounter with Our Lord lead to thousands of students going to confession to one of the hundred plus priests available for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The students had a wonderful time and returned to campus full of zeal and a new commitment to Christ and His Church. It is a blessing to see their love manifest in increased, daily Mass attendance, daily prayer and adoration, willingness to share Christ with their peers, and in service to the poor. We are grateful to our local FOCUS missionaries at Pitt and CMU’s campuses for all their hard work in recruiting our students and facilitating their participation at the conference. This conference provides a unique occasion for the students to encounter the universality of the Church and to witness the many wonderful fruits of the Holy Spirit around the country.
